They Are Not Two But One Flesh

So we continue in our understanding of marriage from the perspective of Jesus and we are looking again at Matthew 19:4-10 scripture. So taking a critical look at verses 4-6, the second thing that caught my attention there is the fact that Jesus specifically mentioned that God made them male and female. From this saying of Jesus, we who are called by the name of the Lord and have become children of God by virtue of our belief in the Lord Jesus Christ know without any doubt that the marriage made by God at the beginning is a marriage between a male and a female. Same-sex marriage is not of God and so we need to always be reminded of that irrespective of how the world paints it to us.

Verse 4-6 reads, “And He answered and said to them, ‘Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning, made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason, a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.'” Matthew 19:4-6 NKJV

The third thing that can’t miss my eyes is the fact that Jesus said they are no longer two but one flesh. So even in the flesh, as far as God is concerned, the husband and his wife are one. That is the aspect that a lot of married couples miss or seem not to understand. In so many marriages today, he is he and she is she. So I want to trust that God to open up our minds to what He meant when He said they are no longer two but one flesh.

It appears that when we enter a marriage union God no longer regards the husband as a different entity from the wife, neither does He regard the wife as a different entity from her husband. So much progress that a man and his wife will make in life is hinged on this truth. So when the husband is praying and seeking God’s face for something, and his wife is praying and seeking the face of God for something totally different from her husband’s direction on the same topic or issue then we can imagine whose prayers God will answer and whose He will deny. Yet they are designed to be one in flesh and spirit.

This truth is so familiar with the devil that he will ensure that he stops at nothing to make the husband and his wife two rather than the one flesh that God has designed them to be at the beginning. When the husband and his wife are united and they have God as their Lord and source of power, nothing becomes impossible for them. That is the truth of the Bible, and that is why Solomon tells us in Ecclesiastes 4:9 that two are better than one; that is why God declared in Genesis 11:6 that “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language, and this is what they begin to do; now nothing that they purpose to do will be withheld from them”, another version says “nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” And then Jesus declared in Matthew 18:19 that “If two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven.” The devil knows these things, he is knowledgeable of the scriptures and so he will ensure that the unity of your marriage does not stand.

For your marriage to fulfill all that God has designed it to be, you need to do all within your means to protect the unity of that marriage. The husband and his wife need to be one in thought, in aspirations, in goals, and even desires. This is the ones God is talking about and it must be worked on by the two and it must be achieved by the two. It’s not that disagreements will not arise, it’s that comprises will have to be made. Ground shifting will have to take place. The one who understands the most of the two in marriage; the one who possesses more wisdom; the one who is filled with God’s Spirit the most should be the one to make the most sacrifice of comprise, the most sacrifice of forgiveness, the most sacrifice of ground shifting. It will not be an easy task because I have experienced it and know what it entails, but the reward far outweighs the sacrifice and the prosperity of your marriage and life far outweighs the grounds you had to and still have to shift to make it happen.
